iPhone Air MagSafe Battery: Unboxing and First Impressions

The iPhone Air’s built-in battery still lasts me through a normal day, but since Apple started selling a $99 MagSafe Battery Pack that can add up to 65% more charge, I wanted to see how well it actually performs.

Inside is a 3.89-volt, 12.26 Wh cell rated at 3,149 mAh — the exact same battery Apple uses in the iPhone Air itself.

The grip is excellent. It’s mostly plastic, but the front surface has a fine matte texture that feels far more premium than most plastic power banks. Because it’s an exposed surface you’ll touch often, though, that coating will probably wear over time, revealing a glossier layer underneath.

The front features only a subtle Apple logo and a tiny status light that’s invisible most of the time and glows only when attached to your iPhone. Green means fully charged; amber means under 100%.

Another perk of using a first-party accessory is how seamlessly it integrates with iOS. You get that smooth MagSafe animation and can instantly see the remaining charge right from the Batteries widget. Just snap it onto your iPhone and you’ll know exactly how much juice is left — no more guessing from tiny blinking lights like with other power banks.

The back — the part that actually contacts your iPhone Air — is even smoother than the front, increasing friction slightly to prevent scratches on the glass back. Unlike Apple’s original MagSafe Battery Pack, this one doesn’t have a clearly defined MagSafe ring.

At just 6.5 mm thick and 125 g, with softly curved edges and a silky finish, it feels great in the hand. There’s a USB-C port on the bottom: plug it into a 30W (or higher) adapter and it’ll wirelessly charge your iPhone Air at up to 20W, it just charges your iPhone at 12W.

Like Apple’s first-gen pack, this one stops at 90% charge to help preserve your iPhone’s battery health.

Although it uses the same cell as the iPhone Air, it won’t deliver a full recharge — expect roughly 65–69% because of wireless power loss. You could plug in a USB-C cable to get more, but at that point you’d be better off with a third-party power bank.

Apple clearly designed this MagSafe battery specifically for the iPhone Air — it fits perfectly, feels balanced, and even when attached, the phone doesn’t feel bulky or top-heavy.

It can also wirelessly charge AirPods or small accessories via cable.

If you’re wondering whether it works with other iPhones — yes and no. It’ll charge any MagSafe iPhone, but it’s shaped for the Air, so the fit is off. I could lay it sideways on my iPhone 17 Pro Max and it charged fine, but it’s obviously not ideal except in a pinch.

As for smart charging behavior, I’ll need more time to test before deciding whether it’s truly more efficient than other packs. But so far, it stays cool while charging — a very good sign for the health of my iPhone Air’s battery.
